Auto stakeholders at odds over how to address NAFTA rules of origin

Auto industry stakeholders responded to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer's prioritization of a tightened auto rule of origin in the NAFTA renegotiation by laying out vastly different visions for what should be included in a retooled agreement. Lighthizer, opening NAFTA talks on Aug. 16, said the U.S. would seek a higher regional value content for autos and auto parts, "and substantial U.S. content," in a modernized deal.
