The art of ancient iron making was passed on only hereditarily and had always been kept confined. Indian iron was famous and exported to many countries throughout the world. Though ancient iron makers were not much aware of the science behind the iron making, yet they had their own wisdom to control the metallurgy of iron making process. The paper discusses the operation and mechanism of iron making in ancient iron making furnace and its implications in the operation of primitive blast furnace which produced liquid iron due to high temperature in its tuyere zone.
