Durgapur Local Centre of the Institution in association with the West Bengal State Centre, IEI and the Institute of Marine Engineers (India), Kolkata Branch organized the Thirty-first National Convention of Marine Engineers and National Seminar on the theme 'Inland Water Transport-Technical Challenges and Opportunities' during October 15-16, 2017 at Kolkata. The Chief Guest, Mr Sisir Kumar Banerjee, President-Elect, IEI, was given a ceremonial guard of honour by the cadets of the Indian Maritime University, Kolkata campus. In his inaugural address, Mr Banerjee stated that Inland Water Transport is a cheap, fuel-efficient, environment-friendly alternative mode of transport with high employment generation potential and is suitable for transporting heavy and bulky materials. He further spoke about the important inland water stretches including Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hoogly and Brahmaputra stretches.
