VOLUNTEER CARETAKER Gina Gregory pauses, mid-tiptoe, halfway across the veranda of the heritage-listed Eyre Bird Observatory. She cocks her head in the pre-dawn darkness and listens intently. For a few minutes the only sound is the breeze shuddering in from the Southern Ocean and across the Nuytsland Nature Reserve, coaxing delicate melodies from wizened mallee and acacias. The midwinter morning is clear and cold. Mallee-spotted dunes surround the observatory, their dusky silhouettes rising so gracefully against the sky it's as if serenity itself slumbered beneath their sandy folds.
