SCATTERED through bushland in and around the nation's largest city is a vanishing historical treasure of which few people are aware. Aboriginal rock engravings believed to be up to 5000 years old — depicting marine and land animals, humans and elaborate Dreamtime figures — abound on flat sandstone shelves from the Central Coast to Wollongong and to the foot of the Blue Mountains. Some are found within sight of Sydney's skyscrapers.
