Adhesive technology is equal parts chemistry and "black magic." The sheer number of available substrates makes it nearly impossible to test each adhesive on every type. However,by conducting tests on a selection of novel,or diffi-cult-to-adhere-to,substrates,we can make inferences that may help narrow the choice of adhesives.'Adhesion' is best defined as the chemical bonding of two substrates.Substrates with reactive groups available for bonding - like OH groups on glass and aluminum - make this chemical bond easier to achieve.Substrates with nothing to react to,such as graphite and Polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE),make adhesion difficult, while most other substrates fit somewhere between the two extremes.
