The r-process signature found in the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Reticulum II

Our understanding of the origin of the heaviest elements in the periodic table through the rapid (r-) process has recently seen tremendous progress. For six decades, the astrophysical site remained unknown but with the discovery of the r-process galaxy Reticulum II and the gravitational waves detection of GW170817, it has become clear that the r-process must predominantly operate in neutron star mergers.
