Christmas 1852 saw a party of diggers, enroute to the Korong goldfields, camped on what was then known as Stoney Creek. One of those diggers, John Bright, decided to do a little prospecting and so began another chapter in Victoria's early gold mining history. Within two months, gold commissioner John Edward Bull, of Bendigo, estimated that around 100 men were at Sandy Creek, as Stoney Creek was now known, and by August 1853, nearly 7,000 were at Nuggety Gully, just south of Sandy Creek, on the Tarnagulla-Dunolly road. The settlement at Sandy Creek was renamed Tarnagulla in 1860, after the sheep station.
