The title of this article is a good mnemonic to learn for a handy mineralogical rule of thumb but I'm not sure what old Friedrich Mohs, the German mineralogist (1773-1839), would think about it, even though it's been around a long time. It's as good a way as any to remember the ten minerals elected by him as reference points for hardness, known as Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness. From the softest to the hardest they are as follows: a mineral according to Mohs is determined by observing whether its surface is scratched by an element of known or defined hardness.
