After 12 years of metal detecting I've come to the realisation that not all treasure glistens, or can be measured by how much you can flog it for on eBay. Every now and then you unearth something that takes you down the rabbit hole and shines a light on a slice of Australia that is now only found in history books. To be totally honest, when I first pulled this tiny piece of metal out of the ground, I wasn't interested in it at all. It was an odd shape, smaller than a threepence and was caked with dirt so I couldn't make out any writing on it. I almost put it straight into my rubbish bag, but had another look and thought I could make out a number on one side. It was a good lesson for all detectorists to double check all finds before tossing them into the bin.
