Researchers at Sikorsky Aircraft Corp claim to have developed a simple and effective means of initiating curing when composite parts are being repaired. In their system, the researchers use a specially treated fibre that is embedded in the adhesive or sealant being used to mend the composite components; the fibre emits energy throughout the sealant to help facilitate uniform curing.Cracks and other faults in structural composite parts of aircraft, such as helicopters, are often repaired by the use of adhesives, but while these are curing, the aircraft is obviously out of service, so engineers often accelerate the process by using a heated blanket.
