The divalent copper ion (Cu2+) is the active principle of all copper-containing fungicides used throughout the world to control the widest range of fungal plant pathogens, but less well known is the ac-tivity of Cu2+ as a highly efficacious bac-tericide. Bactericidal activity shown by the divalent copper cation is a crucially important bonus for agriculture and hor-ticulture because bacteria are among the most devastating plant pathogens and are very difficult to control.
