Drax’s gas capacity could outweigh biomass

UK utility Drax’s generation capacity could become predominantly gas-fi red if preliminary discussions to acquire a portfolio of gas-fi red, hydropower and pumped storage assets from Spanish utility Iberdrola's subsidiary, Scottish Power, go ahead. All Drax’s generation currently comes from its four biomass-fired 645MW units at Selby power plant in northern England. It converted a fourth unit from coal to biomass in August. Drax plans to run the fourth unit at periods of high demand, allowing it to optimise biomass generation at the plant.
