Effect of row spacing and sowing direction on growth attributes of wheat varieties in Kandahar region of Afghanistan

A field experiment was carried out at Tarnak Farm of Afghanistan National Agricultural Science and Technology University (ANASTU) Kandahar, Afghanistan during winter season of 2014-2015to study the effect of row spacing and sowing direction on growth andyield of wheat varieties. The experiment was laid out in FRBD and replicated thrice consisted of two varieties (Shisham Bagh and PBW 154), three row spacing (15, 20 and 25 cm) and two sowing directions (East-West and North-South).Result revealed thatinitial plant population (58 m~(-2)) and plant height at harvest stage were significantly higher in Shisham Bagh variety sown at 20 cm row spacing in N-S direction. Dry matter accumulation (889.7 g m~(-2)) was found higher in PBW 154 sown in 25 cm row spacing in N-S direction but LAI was significantly higher in PBW 154 (3.31) planted at 15 cm row spacing in N-S direction.
