Study of socio-economic indicators for sustainable agricultural land use planning of Buraka micro-watershed in Mewat Region of Haryana

Socio-economic status of the farmers plays an important role in the livelihood activities particularly agriculture in terms of their effect on land management decisions. Therefore, proper understanding of socio-economic parameters is essential for sustainable agricultural land use planning. Keeping this fact in mind, households' socio-economic survey was carried out in economically backward and minority community dominated Buraka micro-watershed area in Mewat Region of Haryana. Results revealed dominance of agriculture and livestock activities in livelihood earning. Majority of the farmers belongs to marginal and small landholding categories while, farming, one of the dominant occupations, mostly practiced by the respondent farmers belonging to theage group of 41-50 years (34.85%) followed by 51-60 years age group (25.76%). Male, female, and total literacy rate was high i.e., 62.17, 49.70 and 55.94%, respectively in the large holdings of surveyed households. Status of resource endowments revealedthat only 77.27% households owned land, 65.15% tube-wells and 50% electric motors whereas 22.73% owned tractors. The above information indicated resource constrained situation of respondent households and needs effective land use planning of the Buraka micro-watershed for improving the socio-economic status.
