Re-usable plastic reel adopted for turbine blades

UK-based composites manufacturer SP Systems is now using polyethylene pipes as reels in the production of composite components for wind turbines. Supplied by plastic pipework specialist Engineering Services (Humber) Ltd (ESHL), UK, the plastic reels save time and are completely re-usable.Using its pipe fabrication facilities in Retford, ESHL cut and machined 500 lengths of polyethylene pipe to specification. The custom-made tubes form the cores of winding reels used by SP Systems in producing glass-reinforced epoxy prepreg sheets, from which the company then moulds its turbine blades.
