摘要

Ultrasonography is increasingly used in emergency departments (EDs), with great benefits to patients by facilitating rapid diagnosis of life-threatening conditions, invasive procedure safety, and efficient care. However, even ultrasonography has risks, one of which is potential transmission of infection. Ultrasonographic probes become contaminated through contact with intact or open skin, vaginal and oral mucosa, and blood from trauma victims or while guiding catheter placement. Ultrasonographic probe contamination with Staphylococcus aureus is well documented, with at least 1 report of an ultrasonographic gel-related staphylococcal outbreak. Unless we confront the infection control issues that come with bringing this technology to busy EDs, we stand the risk of losing the opportunity to use it.
