Methods for producing hybrid ceramic matrix composite (CMC) gas turbine engine blades with high compressive strength at their dovetail sections have been developed by General Electric of Schenectady, New York, USA. Turbine blades generally include an airfoil against which the flow of hot exhaust gas is directed and are mounted to turbine disks by a dovetail, which extends downwards from the airfoil and engages a slot on the turbine disk. The dovetail, named for its shape, experiences very high shear stresses, as it must counteract the rotational forces that would otherwise eject the blade from the disk. These forces increase with the weight of the blade.
