Bilateral nephrectomy significantly improves health-related quality of life in a hemodialysis patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with auto-somal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is an under-recognized issue. Reportedly, HRQoL of patients with ADPKD is similar to that of general population and better than dialysis patients. We describe a patient with ADPKD on dialysis therapy whose HRQoL was salvageable through an operation.A 45-year-old Chinese man who initially presented with he-maturia and flank pain was found to have had ADPKD and hypertension for decades. Maintenance hemodialysis therapy had been initiated 3 years earlier to treat his uremia (serum creatinine, 10.1 mg/dL). He received regular doses of losartan and diltiazem for blood pressure and took acetaminophen as needed for flank pain.
