Hypertension in hemodialysis patients: the role of antihypertensive medications.

Hypertension affects the vast majority of hemodialysis patients.1 Unfortunately, there is a paucity of prospective data to support the safety and efficacy of treating hemodialysis patients to the National Kidney Foundation's current Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) guideline of a predialysis blood pressure (BP) < 140/90 mm Hg. Recently, Heer-spink et al2 conducted a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials performed in dialysis patients to assess the impact of antihypertensive therapy on cardiovascular events, cardiovascular mortality, and all-cause mortality.
