North Central District: Lyndale Park Rose Garden An Old Municipal Rose Garden

A MUNICIPAL ROSE GARDEN was among the first proposals Theodore Wirth made to the commissioners of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board at the end of 1906, his first year as the Park Board's second superintendent. Wirth had just come to Minneapolis from Hartford, Connecticut, where he established and designed the first municipal rose garden in the United States, Elizabeth Park, which opened in 1904.
