Value chain analysis of different types of maize hybrid seed: a comparative study of public and private sector in Bihar

In the Samastipur district of Bihar, one of the top five maize-producing states in India, a study was conducted in 2017-18 to map the value chain of public and private seed systems and estimate the value addition at each successive stage of seed movement. Statistically significant differences were found in gross income, net income, and benefit-cost ratio of maize seed production of single-cross hybrid (SCH) and double-cross hybrid (DCH) with potato intercropping system. Enabling infrastructure and apolicy environment, and innovating public-private partnership models across the seed value chain, is necessary for overall sectoral growth.
