摘要

Irrigated agriculture in India have been put under tremendous pressure due to increasing water scarcity and competition from other sectors and grain production is facing an unprecedented challenge (Yang & Zehnder, 2001). The massive extraction of ground water in the region has led to a steep decline of ground water table failing large numbers of shallow tube wells creating havoc among the farmers and great concerns among the planners. Over irrigation and seepage has caused water logging and salinityand sodicity problem in canal irrigated area. The problems of water management in tube well and canal commands are different due to availability, timeliness and pricing policy. Problems associated with water management practices are of different dimensions and need to be studied. A strategy needs to be formulated to enhance the agricultural productivity in canal and tube well command area. Water use efficiency may be an indicator for good water management practices and need to be studied under varying w3ter regimes.
