The words "family business," to those who aren't involved in one, are likely to produce images from a Norman Rockwell past. But to many ILMA members, the picture is quite different. Unlike some corner diner or "and Sons" moving company, ILMA members' family businesses are 24/7, high-pressure, multidivision — if not multistate — operations with a unique set of challenges and rewards. Here, parent and boss are often the same person, board meetings can happen spontaneously during family meals and adult children sometimes must prove to co-workers that they deserve to hold the jobs they have.
