The Representation of Maritime Culture in Indonesian Folksongs

This research investigates the representation of maritime culture in Indonesian folk songs. The purpose of this researh is how maritime culture represented in Indonesian folk songs. The objects of this research are three music videos of Indonesian falksongs entitled, “Nenek Moyang,”“Tandhuk Majang,” dan “Prau Layar.” This research uses textual and contextual theories and methods. Textual theory is applied to analyze the instrinsic aspects of the folk songs; and the textual methods applied in this research are close reading, close listening, andclose viewing. Close reading is applied to analyse the verbal aspects of the folk songs, including the lyrics and subtitles. Close listening is applied to analyze the aural aspects of the folk songs, including the vocal and musical aspects. Close viewing is applied to analyze the visual aspectsof the folk songs, including the cinematic and iconic aspects. Contextual theory is applied to analyze the extrinsic aspects of maritime culture represented in the folk songs. Contextually, the folk songs represent indonesian maritime culture. The song lyric of “Nenek Moyang” representsmariners as Indonesian anchestors who lived in maritime culture. The song lyric of “Tandhuk Majang” represents maritime culture of Indonesian fishery and fishermen, especially in the coastal area of Madura island. The song lyric of “Prau Layar” represents maritime cultureof coastal and marine tourism in Indonesia, especially in the coastal and marine area of Java island. It can be concluded that the Indonesian folk songs represent textually and contextually the Indonesian maritime culture.
