Appraisal Analysis on the Main Character of Novel the Old Man and the Sea and Its Three Indonesian-Translated Versions Lelaki Tua dan Laut

摘要

Translating a literary work is often considered as an activity of creating a new work which should not be identical with the original. Any deletion of information in the source text is justified during the process of transferring the source text message into the target text for thesake of ‘beauty.’ As a matter of fact, characterization is one of important aspects in a novel that should be maintained in the translation for it represents the image of the author. To investigate this phenomena, a research on the characterization of the main character (Santiago)of Hemingway’s novel the Old Man and the Sea (TOMATS) is conducted. Martin and Rose’s Appraisal theory as a part of Systemic Functional Language (SFL) studies is employed in this research as an approach to evaluate Santiago’s physical condition (appreciation), emotion(affect), and personality (judgement). The objectives of this research are to compare the characterization of Santiago in the original version with its three Indonesian-translated versions Lelaki Tua dan Laut (LTDL) and to assess the accuracy level of the translations.
