A Review of Big Data Digital Forensic Analysis in Advanced Metering Infrastructure

Smart grid infrastructure is one of the Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) that combines the energy and telecommunications infrastructure and Internet networks. According to an ENISA report, cyber-attacks on CII can cost organizations up to €15 million. Various types ofcyber-attacks on the rise targeted specifically at smart grid, such as Stuxnet attack which cause severe consequences on critical physical infrastructure. With the mass deployment of smart meters, the important components in smart grids infrastructure that is used to collect, calculate andtransfer the energy consumption data from the end user premise. The number of reads will increase from 6 million reads per year to almost 18 billion per year. Moreover, the growing numbers of smart meter installation, which later creating smart metering data contributes in generating a largeamount of data, will cause difficulties in the detection of fraud and malicious users in digital forensic investigation. With the availability of large-scale potential evidence brings new challenges in digital forensics investigations such as to spot fraudulent activity and to prove the realmalicious users behind those activities. This paper identifies and discusses the research gaps concerning AMI big data forensic investigation. It is hoped that this review will expedite the research area of big data forensic digital investigation in AMI.
