Sight Word Reading Approach in Reading Syllables for Children with ASD: A Case Study

Sight word reading approach is a reading-by-memory approach. This approach is an approach of complete words that relate the words with their meanings. This research was a case study on how to teach reading syllables to a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by using sight wordreading approach. This research was aimed to see the effect of the use of sight word reading approach in the learning of reading syllables in Indonesian applied to a six-year child with ASD. The method used was single subject design with A-B design. Before the research began, the child wastaught to give verbal responses towards 5 cards whose syllables would be taught (bo-la, bi-ru, bu-ku, ka-ki, and ku-da). When the child was able to match the word to the card which had the writing correctly, fading was applied by removing the writing on the card. After the child did it, nexthe learnt to match the syllables to form words based on the card shown. After the child learnt for 15 sessions which the duration of each session was about 5–10 minutes, the child could label 8 of 9 syllables taught. Regarding that this research was a case study, even this approach wassuccessful in improving the participant in this case a child with ASD’s ability in reading syllables, but this approach may not always be successful to other children with different ages and different backgrounds.
