In 1653, Margaret Lucas Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, published Poems and Fancies, the first major work of natural philosophy written in English by a woman. Though marginalized as eccentric, Cavendish participated in the emergence of modern science, drawing on her own interests and exposure to issues of the day through her husband's circle to write eight scientific volumes issued in fourteen editions; in 1667, she was the first woman allowed to observe experiments at the recently established Royal Society.
