There is a wonderful Benjamin Franklin quote,”We must, indeed, all hang together or,most assuredly,we shall all hang separately”,which has been on my mind of late as it captures something that remains as true now as it was then: working together will always be for the greater good, whether taking a political stand or,more specifically, for converting to get diverse systems to align in order to take a large roll and turn it into beautiful labels,or print individually oriented information onto consumer products. If the web is fed too fast into a slower-moving cutting operation,it will be wasted,if too slow it will not catch properly and, again,a jam or productivity headache will occur. It is a source of constant amazement to me just how incredible factories are at processing enormous quantities of raw materials into finished goods, with exceptional precision and on footprints that are trending to being smaller, all so that more can be produced from fewer machines with less downtime and no errors. One apt but mind-boggling description given earlier this year for print productivity was that it was like clay pigeon shooting where the target was a bullet being fired instead of the disc and with a bigger propulsion system, and the shot was a Frisbee;how many out of thousands of chances would even be close? Fortunately, with talented personnel, and machines and systems that are highly and precisely calibrated, this can become more like shooting a door from point blank range...there is still the chance to miss but it has been reduced to a point so small that its unlikely.
