China looks to move scrap processing off-shore

Last month, the Chinese government gave notice to domestic scrap processing companies that they must stop importing the majority of Category 7 scrap from late 2018 (namely scrap cables, motors and hardware), due to the harmful environmental impact of processing this waste. Over 50% of the 3.35Mt of copper scrap imported into China in 2016 fell into this category; as such, domestic scrap processers will be forced to process Category 7 in Category 6 (No.1 and No.2 scrap) overseas before transporting into China.
