Japan General Standard for apples and other fruit was enacted in 1980. In the intervening years, pronounced changes in fruit production, distribution and consumption created a gap between the General Standard and actual conditions, and they were revised in 1997. This paper clarifies the Standard of Fuji apples, a variety that dominates the volume of apples handled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market, and problems surrounding these standards.
