AS THE CURTAIN was raised on the Gripen E prototype at exactly 16.00hrs local time in Saab's facility at Linkoping, Sweden, on May 18, the world saw the West's latest fighter for the first time. Initial observations revealed a beefed-up Gripen, with stockier wing roots to accommodate additional fuel, additional weapons hardpoints, and an array of new external sensors.
