THE US NAVY'S newest aircraft carrier, the future USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), was christened during a December 7, 2019, ceremony in Newport News, Virginia. The future CVN 79 is the second ship of the Gerald R. Ford class, and will replace the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) when it enters operational service. The second aircraft carrier to honor the 35th President of the US is currently In production at the Huntington Ingalls Industrles' Newport News Shipbuilding division. Like the first ship of the class, CVN 79 will incorporate myriad new technologies including a new propulsion system, electric plant, Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG), machinery control, radars and integrated warfare systems.
