Firms seek to buy Ameren power plant in bid to save FutureGen coal project

Seeking to keep the Energy Department’s long-troubledFutureGen clean-coal project alive, the initiative’s 11 industrialpartners said last week they will seek to purchase an oilfiredpower plant from merchant generator Ameren, whichearlier this month reneged on its $150 million commitmentto retrofit the unit.The partners, known collectively as the FutureGenAlliance, said they hope to acquire portions of the soonto-be-shuttered Meredosia Energy Center in Illinois, whereAmeren was to retrofit the oil-fired unit. But the alliance didnot give an estimate on how much those assets would cost.
