Sex pheromone as part of an integrated pest management in green house, to use poisonous moths as an example

Sex pheromone in lepidopteran moth is described as an odour signals secreted from the female insect to attract males for mating. So, if the minute trace of volatile chemical that serve for communication between the sexes of such moths, isolated, identified and synthesized, to develop traps eliminating the male to aid in control of such insects is possible. But, after a decade of pheromone research techniques, to use the sex pheromone alone such as mass trapping, lure and kill and mating disruption were not successful in an opened field condition. The reason for this result might be come from that the pest insect can survive in nature with its high reproductive and migratory potentials. Recently studies with poisonous moth, the pest monitoring strategy with the sex pheromone trap within the green house within limited space) is a promising one. So, there would be no widespread replacement of insecticides in future by pheromones. Rather, the pheromone trap would have a role in complementing insecticide use in carefully researched, and integrated pest management programmes.
