Experiments were conducted to study the interaction between plum pox virus (PPV) and plum bark split virus (PBSV) in plums. The viruses were detected using ELISA. Volatile compounds present in healthy and infected trees were also analysed by GC-MS. Plum cultivars 'Cristi' and 'BN 52' infected with PBSV had not been naturally infected with PPV, while the cultivars 'Tuleu gras', 'Hakman' and 'De Bistrita' free of PBSV were infected with PPV. Cultivars infected with PBSV were resistant only to natural PPV infections but sensitive to artificial PPV inoculations. PBSV-infected trees had higher contents of benzaldehyde, decanedioic acid, trans-ocimene, dimethyl ester and beta-fenchyl alcohol/camphene than healthy trees. PPV-infected trees had higher content of benzaldehyde but lower contents of decanedioic acid and dimethyl ester than healthy and PBSV-infected trees.
