An experiment was conducted during the 2000/01 growing seasons to evaluate the performance of some Japanese pear (Pyrus serotina [P. pyrifolia]) cultivars budded on European pear (P. communis) seedling rootstock under Tehran (Iran) conditions. The Japanese pear cultivars KS6, KS7, KS8, KS9, KS10, KS11, KS12, KS13 and KS14, along with the local European pear cultivar Shahmiveh (Sh), were budded on European pear seedling rootstocks. The performance of budded trees was evaluated with some growth and physiological measurements during the two complete growing seasons. The results showed >80% grafting success in the first season. Microscopic examination in the grafting site of all cultivars 2 to 4 weeks after budding showed a good callus formation. In the second season after budding, 10% of grafted trees failed to grow, but differences between cultivars were not statistically significant. There were significant differences between cultivars in leaf mineral concentrations such as N, P and K. The highest N, P and K were observed in KS9, KS12 and KS6, respectively, and the lowest concentrations in Sh, KS6 and Sh, respectively..
