Annihilation electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is light emission that results from energetic electron-transfer reactions between electrochemically oxidised and reduced precursors. The first explorations of annihilation ECL from mixtures of transition metal complexes have created new approaches to enhance emission intensities and manipulate the colour of emission through applied electrochemical potentials. However, the mechanisms at play in these systems are poorly understood and preliminary reports have contained conflicting observations.
