Experience has highlighted that those engineers and managers who have rules on their thumbs have quickly offered accurate enough and speedy answers in the Operations Review Meetings and to the concerned top executives such as the department heads and even CEO & COO. Further, experience has taught us that the use of thumb rules is a great help in finding answers to problems, using only the key information available about a given situation. Gut-feel and fair assumption are accepted practice. And, all approximations have inherent application of some thumb rules. So it is not surprising at all that those who either abstain or do not offer an answer for want of data or software may not even be attempting to solve problems.
