Pots as art: still a cultural shock?

Our summer exhibition at the Galerie du Don, L'art du pot: un choc culturel is designed to illustrate the point that pots, craft-born and capable of serving usefully, may well be considered as fine art. For many people, this terminological clash presents an insoluble conundrum. After all, how can a fine yet humble cup - one of Julian Stair's unglazed beakers, say - possibly rise to art's rarefied Elysium, when it is clearly nothing more than a finely fashioned drinking vessel?
