There is no doubt that, in a commercial sense, ceramics are 'hot property' right now. Over the past 12 months, sales across the world have seen some staggering prices realised. Ceramics took centre stage in our Made In Britain sale (13 September) - an auction that has become a popular biannual feature of Sotheby's calendar. The sale, which focuses on the interdisciplinary nature of the British arts scene over the past century, was led by a special section celebrating A Century of Ceramics in British Art. Met with great enthusiasm from both new and established collectors, all bar two of the pieces sold, and 76% of pieces achieved in excess of their upper estimates. The works charted the broad and varied approaches that potters, ceramists and artists have taken towards using the earth's most basic material.
