I learned about ceramics in Japan. While studying at Kanazawa College of Art in Ishikawa Prefecture, I was surrounded by large-scale contemporary sculptural ceramics, which were influenced by both expressionist, modernist ideas and by Japan's rebellious Sodeisha movement, which was formed after World War Two. Neither the teachers nor students made tableware or traditional vases. Conventional ceramic decoration was likely to be perceived as something unnecessary, or even as a distraction from the main concept.
