George Reichenbach (Romhanyi since 1935), a prominent personality of European and Hungarian pathology and histochemistry, was born on September 11, 1905 in Szar, Hungary, as one of five children of a Parish clerk. Romhanyi grew up as a rather average child in a small village inhabited by ethnic Germans. His father, Georg Reichenbach, was a notary and the children spoke Hungarian as well as German with their parents at home. All three of the boys became physicians and both girls became teachers. The values the family espoused were humbleness, puritanism, modesty, and respect for achievements.
