摘要

When the U.S. sneezes, goes the adage, Canada catches a cold. And there's been a lot of sneezing — not to mention dry heaves and worse — since the election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States. Love him or loathe him, the billionaire populist triumphed in large part because of his promise to scrap NAFTA and the yet-to-be-ratified Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal. While campaigning for the presidency, Trump lambasted NAFTA as the worst trade deal of all for hastening the departure to Mexico and China of many hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of manufacturing jobs, and called the TPP "a potential disaster" for the U.S. Trump has promised to negotiate — in his words — "fair bilateral trade deals that bring jobs and industry back onto American shores," and his supporters are going to expect him to deliver.
