The Swedish Skokloster Castle, in the countryside between Stockholm and Uppsala, holds a treasure of historical artefacts from the seventeenth century: paintings, tapestries, weaponry, scientific instruments, books and other curiosities, most of which has been brought together by one of its former owners, the Swedish army commander-in-chief Carl Gustaf Wrangel (1613-1676). Among the many portraits in the castle is a large picture of one of Wrangel's flag officers: the 'Obrist' Johan van der Wyck (1623-1679), a man of German noble decent, born near Munster, but educated in the Dutch Republic (Fig. 1).
