Richard Matheson at the Nickel Institute points out that by 2060 the world is projected to add 230bn m2 of buildings - an area equivalent to the entire current global building stock. And given that, according to the United Nations Environment Programme, buildings and their construction together generate 36% of global energy use and nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually, the construction industry should be seeking out ways to reduce the environmental burden of buildings.
