Andre Green, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, died in 2012 at the age of 84. This slim volume assembles papers from a conference hosted by the Institute of Psychoanalysis in his honour two years later. Taken together they provide a Here Green touches on the unique nature of psychoanalytic conversations and how inner thoughts become exteriorized. His model of 'contemporary psychoanalysis' is critical of the limitations of conventional psychoanalysis in the face of complex borderline disorders, its serf-serving obscurantism, and the phoney hierarchy between psychoanalysis and dynamic psychotherapy. He differentiates the 'internal frame' of the analyst - her sensitivity to transference and countertransference - from the 'external frame' - conventional daily analysis, use of the couch, persecutory rather than facilitative silence, and so on, which he sees at worst illustrating 'deadly repetition compulsion in the place of desire' (p. 146).
