Rare breeding birds in the UK in 2017: Mark Holling and the Rare Breeding Birds Panel

This report documents the status of rare or scarce native birds that were recorded breeding, or showed signs of breeding, in the UK in 2017.The year will be remembered for the first breeding record of Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax in the UK and asa good year for several colonising European species nesting in England, particularly those associated with wetlands, such as Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis and Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus. For the first time ever, data were received directly from all recording areas.
