SWEET CHESTNUT FLOWERS, A LIFE-SAVER FOR INSECTS DURING THE 2017 DROUGHT IN THE OCCITANIE REGION OF FRANCE

The heatwave in the Occitanie region of France in June 2017 severely limited the foraging locations for a wide range of insects. Coming to the rescue was late flowering sweet chestnut Castanea sativa which is profligate in its canopies full of blossom, rich in pollen and nectar. This was a life-saver for insects and a watering hole where many species could be pleasantly observed.
